Remote Operation
3.1
Introduction
The Series 12000A Microwave Synthesizers can be operated from a remote host over the General
Purpose Interface Bus (GPIB) using either Standard Commands for Programmable Instruments (SCPI)
or Native language commands. Operation via the RS-232 interface is possible using the Native
commands for all three models.
3.1.1
Languages Available
All synthesizer functions are designed to be controlled over the General Purpose Interface Bus (GPIB).
At present, SCPI and IEEE 488 Native languages are implemented. These languages are introduced
briefly below, and discussed in more detail under separate headings.
•
Standard Commands for Programmable Instruments (SCPI) is a language specified by the SCPI
Consortium. It is designed to standardize commands and data to and from instruments regardless of the
manufacturer. SCPI promotes consistency from the remote programming standpoint between
instruments, which are of the same class or have the same functional capability. For a given function
such as frequency or power, SCPI specifies the command set that is available for that function
•
The Native syntax is a set of IEEE 488 commands developed for remote control of Giga-tronics
instruments

NOTE:
The unit may be operated via its RS-232 interface, using the same language(s)
as are supported on its GPIB interface. Other GPIB functionality, such as that provided
by the GPIB lines IFC, SRQ, etc., and by GPIB multiline messages, such as GET, DCL,
etc., are not supported over the RS-232 interface. The RS-232 interface’s parameters
are: 9600 baud, 8 bits per character, 1 stop bit, no parity, and neither software (XON/
XOFF) nor hardware (RTS/CTS) flow control. Commands must be terminated with a
carriage return. Any legal command following an unrecognized command is ignored
until a carriage return. The sending of commands prior to the unit’s completion of its
powerup initialization is not recommended. The use of both the GPIB and the RS-232
interface at the same time is not allowed.
