Example 1
An application rate of 3.75 kg/ha of Medic (clover
seed) is desired on a planting width of 12 metres.
The reducer plate is in place to meter this low
rate at a moderate width. From page 14 we can
determine the required handle rotations (32
turns). For the first test the variator is set to 3,
this is an estimate giving a starting point for
calibration.
After setting the variator adjustment lever to 3
and rotating the calibration handle 32 turns we
can weigh the collected seed. For this example
we find we have a seed collection of:
Seed collected = 0.16kg
Therefore the actual sowing rate will be:
0.16kg x 20 = 3.2 kg/ha.
It will be necessary to increase the variator
adjustment and retest the system to obtain the
desired 3.75 kg/ha.
Example 2
An application rate of 10 kg/ha of rye grass is
desired on a planting width of 10.0 metres. The
yellow reducer plate should be removed to cater
for this moderate rate of a long and light seed.
From page 14 we can determine the required
handle rotations (38.5 turns) and estimate the
variator setting of 5.
After setting the variator adjustment lever to 5
and rotating the calibration handle 38.5 turns we
can weigh the collected seed. For this example
we find we have a seed collection of:
Seed collected = 415g
Therefore the actual sowing rate will be
415g x 20 = 8.3 kg/ha.
Increase the variator setting and retest until the
desired rate is obtained.
If desired application rate of rye grass is higher
than the variator setting can obtain, it may be
necessary to remove the meterwheel cover plate
from inside the bin or change the meterwheel.
Extremely low rates
When applying extremely low rates it may
be necessary to collect a double calibration
sample to simulate 1/10
th
ha instead of 1/20
th
ha.
Increasing the sample size will improve
calibration accuracy.
Variator Adjustment Stop
The variator adjustment stop will allow the
operator to mark the position of the variator
handle after the pasture planter has been
calibrated. The stop will be a useful tool to
ensure that the variator handle can be easily and
accurately repositioned if the handle needs to be
moved. Setting the variator handle to zero will
stop the metershaft or reduce to such an extent
that the shaft will only creep.

Recording Planting Detail
As an aid to the calibration process it is
beneficial to record planting detail in the chart
provided on page 15 & 16. This can be used as
a future reference for variator settings and
meterbox adjustments when calibrating.
