DRIVE SHAFT COUPLING
SHAFT COUPLING –
The main motor drives
the compressor by means of a curved jaw-type coupling.
Each coupling hub is fixed to the shaft with a set screw and key combination. The motor power is
delivered to the compressor via a single, vibrations damping element
– see Figure 8-1 for the details of
the coupling components. The motor and compressor shafts are aligned with the help of a stiff, cast and
machined housing assembly. The coupling assembly requires no lubrication.

The compressor starts and stops automatically. Automatic restarting can
cause injury or death. Open, lockout and tag out main disconnect and any
other circuits before servicing the unit.
Coupling Element and Hub Inspection.
1. Rotating machinery can cause injury or death. Open main disconnect, lockout and tagout power
supply to compressor package before working on the electric motor.
2. Remove fasteners securing the coupling guard to access to the coupling area within the adaptor
housing.
3. Inspect the outer surfaces of the hubs and element and check the gap between the hub jaws
–
see dimension
“E” on Figure 8-2. If the gap has increased by more than 2-3mm beyond its
nominal limit of 24/25.8mm, or if damage (e.g., deformation, breakage, extrusion) to the element
is evident in any of its eight (8) outer spokes or damage to the hubs (e.g., wear and tear,
breakage) is evident on its jaws, the components must be removed for a thorough inspection and
replaced.
