Processing and Common Operations
Removing the Cell Processing Set
Use the following procedure to remove the cell processing set.

Open the centrifuge cover interlock latch (if applicable).

Do one of the following:
• For protocols ending with resuspended cells in the cell processing bag,
proceed to step 3.
-or-
• For protocols ending with packed cells in the cell processing bag, proceed
to step 6.

Lift the seal weight slightly so that the seal weight latch arms clear the plastic
blocks (Figure 6-4 on page 6-5). Open the sliding covers, leaving the seal
weight in place on the sliding posts.

Verify that the centrifuge bowl cover can be removed by lifting up on the
locking pin and rotating the cover counterclockwise (Figure 6-5 on page 6-6).

Do one of the following:
• If the centrifuge bowl cover does not rotate, you must remove enough
fluid to allow the cover to rotate before sealing the cell processing set.
Proceed to “Removing the Centrifuge Bowl Cover When the Cell
Processing Bag is Overfilled” on page 6-32.
-or-
• If the cover does rotate, proceed to step 6.

Do the following:
a Hermetically seal the clear tubing between the junction manifold and the
rotating seal.
b Remove the centrifuge bowl cover.
c Slide the centrifuge bowl cover into the slot at the base of the control
panel. Remove the two white alignment blocks from the centrifuge bowl
area and set them aside.
d Hermetically seal the clear tubing below the rotating seal.
e Detach the cell processing bag.

Remove the cell processing bag from the centrifuge bowl.

Hermetically seal and detach the collection container connected to the blue-
striped tubing (if applicable).
Warning:
The cell
processing set
used on the
COBE 2991 is not a “closed
system.” Therapeutic cell
products for transfusion
should not be stored for
more than 24 hours in a
non-frozen state if they are
processed on the COBE
2991.
