Main memory
Spare Channel Mode

This mode is only supported by Intel
®
Xeon
®
5600 processor series.
In this mode, channel C forms a replacement for the two channels A and B and
channel F forms a replacement for the two channels D and E. Channels C and
F are not available as regular main memory. The channels are populated in the
same way as in Performance Channel Mode.

All three channels must be populated identically as regards the size and
organization of the memory modules.
●
Memory modules with different clock frequencies and different speed ratings
can be used within a channel, whereby the settings of the slowest memory
module are used for the channel.
●
The timings in the active channels (A and B) and in the spare channel (C)
can be set differently.
●
Only 2/3 of the maximum memory bandwidth is available in Spare Channel
Mode.
●
In Spare Channel Mode, the total main memory available in the system is
2/3 the size of the installed memory.
