3.4 MPI Module Overview
3.4.1 Installation Adapter
The Installation Adapter (P/N 87988-00) simplifies system installation and configuration by
installing between the FDL-978 and existing aircraft wiring. This eliminates temporary wiring
during installations and the need for additional disconnects between equipment. The
Installation Adapter combines all of the features necessary to configure the system including:
Remote On Power switch
RS-232 MPI connector with Port 5 or 3 selector switch
Password reset switch

Systems without a dedicated MPI port can use the Installation Adapter to provide an MPI
connector for the MPI Module described below.
3.4.2 MPI Module
The FreeFlight Systems (FFS) MPI module is a battery powered
device that communicates with the aircraft’s ADS-B equipment
maintenance port. It provides Wi-Fi connectivity to an Android device
loaded with the free ADS-B MPI app.
The MPI Module (P/N 87710-00) connects to the aircraft’s ADS-B
equipment MPI (Serial Port 5 or Port 3) via a DB-9 female
connector. This allows the ADS-B equipment configuration and
status to be accessed wirelessly using the ADS-B MPI app. The
MPI module USB micro-AB connector can also be connected to the ADS-B equipment USB
micro-AB maintenance connector.
The MPI Module must be configured for the same baud rate as the port to which it
is connected. Refer to the MPI Module Help Guide, FreeFlight Document 87837
for more information.
3.4.3 ADS-B MPI App
The ADS-B MPI app allows the user to configure and verify ADS-B equipment settings, access
diagnostic information, log, and play back information. The location of the equipment and the
traffic received is also displayed on a graphical map.
