- Referring to hardware, a module is a self-contained component.
mouse
- The most popular pointing device. It was called a mouse because it more
or less resembled one, with the cord being the mouse’s tail.

- Batteries which are common in notebook computers and con-
tain Nickel-Metal Hydride.

parallel port
- A socket on a computer used to connect a printer or other parallel
device via the computer’s parallel interface.
parallel printer
- A printer that receives information from a computer one char-
acter (letter, number, etc.) at a time.
partition
- A reserved part of disk or memory that is set aside for some purpose.
New hard disks must be partitioned before they can be formatted for the operat-
ing system, this is done with the FDISK utility.

PCMCIA Card
- A credit-card sized, removable module for portable computers
standardized by PCMCIA. Also known as PC Cards, they are 16-bit devices that
are used to attach modems, network adapters, sound cards, radio transceivers,
solid-state disks and hard disks to a portable computer. The PC Card is a “plug
and play” device, which is configured automatically by the Card Services soft-
