• If you are recording captured images to video and the video
codec is not compatible with the color depth of the video
source, you could set the display format to match the
requirements of the video codec.
• If you want to save disk space, you could set the display
format to a lower color depth to reduce the size of recorded
image files or videos. When you set a lower color depth the
video and image files saved by the VGA2Ethernet user
interface are smaller and so use less disk space.
• If you have special requirements for a color depth that is
different from the color depth produced by the video source,
you could set the display format to the color depth that you
require.
The VGA2Ethernet device captures images at the color depth of
the video source up to the maximum color depth supported by
the device. The maximum color depth supported by the
VGA2Ethernet Frame Grabber is 24 bits per pixel (bpp). See the
for more information.
Converting color images to grayscale or black and white
If the VGA2Ethernet device is capturing color RGB images and
you set the display format to grayscale or black and white, the
VGA2Ethernet user interface converts the images. Conversion
from color to grayscale or black and white causes extra demand
on the video capture workstation CPU.
Color depth, bits per pixel (bpp)
Color depth or bits per pixel (bpp) (also known as color
resolution) describes the number of bits used to represent the
color of a pixel in a bitmapped image or video frame. The
VGA2Ethernet and KVM2Ethernet devices support a number of
color depths:
• RGB 24 bits per pixel, RGB 8:8:8 format is also known as true
color and millions of colors. It is the highest color depth
normally used and can display over 16.7 million colors. Most
video codecs require a color depth of 24 bpp.
