Device Identification

In  response  to  the  DEVICE  IDENTIFICATION  command,  the  module  sends  back  6  bytes
(including  a  check  sum):  0x00,  0x00,  0x02,  0x18,  0x18,  0x0C,  0x00,  0xDA.    This  will
identify the module as an ETAS LA3 to INCA software.

Simulated O

2

 Sensor (EGO) Output

Since the UEGO sensor used by the F/A Monitor has the same thread size as most production
O

2

sensors  (i.e.  EGO  or  HEGO  sensors),  the  production  mounting  hole  can  be  used.

However, if the production O

2

sensor is not connected to the engine control unit (ECU), the

ECU  may  go  into  "back-up"  mode.    The  F/A  Monitor  avoids  this  problem  by  providing  a
simulated O

2

sensor output that can be fed into the ECU.

The  simulated  O

2

sensor  output  is  a  0V  (lean)  to  1V  (rich)  signal  that  switches  at

Lambda=1.0.  This is the same switch point as the production O

2

 sensor.  The simulated O

2

sensor  output  is  available  at  the  short  black  wire  near  the  blue  connector  of  the  wiring
harness.    A  connection  must  be  made  between  the  black  wire  and  the  vehicle's  O

2

  sensor

signal  wire  on  the  vehicle's  wiring  harness.    Note  that  the  production  O

2

  sensor  is  both

electrically  and  physically  disconnected  from  the  vehicle  when  the  simulated  O

2

  sensor

output is being used.

When using the simulated O

2

sensor feature, two things must be kept in mind:

The vehicle's ECU may have a feature to detect if the O

2

 sensor's heater is operating properly.

If  this  is  the  case,  an  electrical  connection  between  the  O

2

  (

not

  the  UEGO)  sensor's  heater

wires and the vehicle's wiring harness must be made.

The  vehicle's  ECU  may  have  a  feature  to  detect  if  the  O

2

  sensor  is  operating  properly  by

pumping  current  into  and  out  of  the  O

2

sensor.    Depending  on  the  sophistication  of  the

feature, it may be that the stock O

2

sensor must be left alone and another mounting location

be used for the UEGO sensor.
