Design
The MS, 100 Reference Monitor System is designed to
offer high acoustic output wide bandwidth, and accurate
reproduction in a compact package. It is ideal for recording and
production studio use or any application where critical program
evaluation is needed. Performance can be characterized by
referencly flat response over the entire audio bandwidth over very
wide frontal angles. This impressive performance is the result of an
extensive engineering program to design and produce a system
capable of upgrading the acoustical monitoring of program signal
and to take advantage of the improved recording and
broadcasting technologies employed in the eighties.
Description
The MS -100 Reference Monitor is a three way system
incorporating an auxiliary bass radiator port substitute. The front
baffle is designed to minimize transmission of re- radiated high
frequency information and to provide halfsphere radiation
throughout
the
mid
and high frequency band, maintaining uniform
polar response. The attention to detail in the MS -100's construction
ensures reference performance and unit to unit consistency.
Low Frequency Data
The 250mm. (10") bass driver utilizes a unique
poly-laminated
cone which improves rigidity and lowers distortion
by decreasing bell -mode resonan ces. The driver is housed in a 70
litre enclosure with a 300 mm. (12") auxiliary bass radiator
acoustically coupled to it for improved low frequency bandwidth
and elimination of internal cabinet high -frequency information
emanating from a vent
Mid Frequency Data
The 110 mm.
(41/2")
mid driver is also polylaminated for
improved articulation and lower distortion. It utilizes a massive
magnet assembly and an unusually long voice coil for high power
handling and low distortion, even at full monitoring levels. It is
housed in a separate 2.6 litre sealed enclosure. The driver is
recessed flush with the baffle for proper half sphere radiation.
High Frequency Data
Our 26mm. (I") dome tweeter exhibits exceptionally
high power handling capacity as a result of precise thermal design.
Magnetic damping fluid serves as a heat sink for the voice coil, as it
also eliminates cavity resonances for a smoother response. The
massive magnet assembly utilizes special machining for precise
focusing of all energy at the voice coil, achieving over 18,000 Gauss
in the gap. This results in an even more extended high frequency
response. Excellent dispersions is derived from careful contouring
of dome cross -section. The increased thermal capacity in addition
to uniformly smooth and well-dispersed response results in a
tweeter of exceptional reliability and sonic quality.
The Crossover
In addition to using the finest drivers, we've designed
the most sophisticated crossover available in a compact monitor.
Design parameters were mathematical ly calculated, and then
continuously
adjusted during an extensive listening evaluation. The
crossover was then subjected to precision acoustic measurement
The resulting network is based on a third order (1 8dB per octave)
filter that achieves precise phase matching, and is specially
compensated for the woofer, mid range, and tweeter responses and
their interactions, thus allowing for imperceptible transition in the
crossover regions.
