Figure 5-2 Tracing a 'Wire Mix' Fault
5.4 Tracing Partial Short Circuits
Short circuits between the main power connections will cause protection circuits to
open. However, a partial short may cause unwanted battery discharge and other
problems. It may be traced in the same way as other faults, but the signal generator
must be connected to the two connections that show the partial short. The trace signal
will now flow through the partial short circuit, as well as any other existing loads, making
tracing difficult if loads cannot be disconnected.
In Figure 5-3, the signal generator has been connected across the main bus bars, and
the fault traced as before. However, it will be necessary to disconnect the loads in turn
to get a valid reading. That is, load A must be disconnected when reading #2 is made;
then the fault at the other end of the bus bar will show accordingly. When readings #4
and #6 are attempted, a red indication, indicating the fault is not in this branch, will only
show if Load B and Load C respectively are disconnected.
