l. Cause and prevention of recoil: Recoil may occur when the tip of the guide rail
touches an object or when the wood bends and leads to the chain becoming stuck
in the cut. Touching with the rail tip may lead to an unexpected backward reaction in
some cases in which the guide rail is knocked upwards towards the operator. When
the chain becomes stuck on the top edge of the guide rail, the rail may recoil towards
the operator. Any of these reactions may cause you to lose control over the saw and
possibly injure yourself severely. Do not only rely on the safety features installed in
the chain saw. As operator of the chain saw, you should take several precautions to
prevent accidents and injuries while working with it. Recoil is the result of a faulty or
unintended use of the power tool. It can be prevented by appropriate precautions as
described below.
• Hold the chain with both hands (thumb and fingers enclose the grip of the
chain saw). Position your body and arms in a way that makes you withstand
recoil forces. If suitable precautions are taken, the operator can master the recoil
forces.
• Avoid abnormal body positions and do now saw above shoulder height. This
prevents accidental touching with the rail tip and allows you better control over
the chain saw in unexpected situations.
• Always use the replacement rails and sawing chains specified by the
manufacturer. Wrong replacement rails and sawing chains may cause the chain
to tear and/or recoil.
• Observe the manufacturer‘s instructions concerning sharpening and
maintenance of the sawing chain. Depth limiters that are too low increase the
recoil tendency.
