Basic Setup & Internet Access
3.5 DSL/Cable Modem Internet Access
Before you connect a broadband access device, e.g. a DSL/Cable
modem, to the router, you need to know what kind of Internet access
is provided by your ISP.
The following paragraphs deal with three widely used broadband ac-
cess services. These are
PPPoE Client, PPTP Client,
and
Static
IP
for DSL/Cable Modem. In most cases, you will get a DSL/Cable
modem from the broadband access service provider. The router is
connected behind the broadband device and works as a NAT or IP
router for broadband and ISDN connections.
In addition to broadband access capabilities, the
ISDN
port can do dial
backup, or provide remote access and remote management functions
to support more flexible network connectivity. The following ap-
plication scenario shows that the head office is capable of getting on
to the Internet through the Vigor2000 and a broadband device and
connecting to the branch office via an ISDN network simultaneously.
