SNMP PROTOCOL
SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is used for monitoring and controlling a wide
variety of different units in a network.
A description of the unit - the MIB (Management Information Base) - must be loaded in the central
unit ("manager") from which the unit is monitored.
A monitored unit contains a program ("agent") which can answer queries from the manager and
execute commands. Furthermore, the agent may of its own accord generate a message (“trap” or
“inform”) and send it to the manager. In this way, the central unit can be informed of a fault.
