OPERATING THE TRAOTOR
The gear positions for the 4-speed gearbox 1 - 3 and the 6-speed
R-2-4
gearbox H- 2 - R are cast on the gearbox cover.
L-3-1
NOTE : Operation of the 6-speed gearbox is similar to the 4-speed
type. First determine whether a high or low speed is required and, with
the clutch pedal depressed, place the left-hand lever in the "H" (high)
or "L" (low) position. Then, with the clutch pedal still depressed, select
the required gear by moving the right-hand lever. The lever for selecting
High and Low gears has no neutral position.
The tractor must be brought to a standstill before changing from high
to low speed.
Gear changi
ng
by the inexperienced while the tractor is in motion may
result in serious and costly damage to the gearbox pinions. This may also
occur if force is necessary to engage the gears, due to incorrect clu,tch adjustment.
(See
clutch adjustment, page 32.)
lJse of Steering Wheel
Do not pull the steering wheel round when the tractor is stationary.
This causes high stresses for which the steering mechanism is not designed.
When turning the tractor round in a confined space, or negotiating an
awkward corner, it is always possible to move the tractor gently forward
or backward and to pull the steering wheel round progressiv
e
ly as the
tractor moves.
llse of Engine Controls
The life of the engine
.
can be safeguarded by considerate handling.
Therefore :-
Do not keep the · choke open one second longer than is necessary ;
Do not vary the throttle when warming up ;
Reduce engine speed by means of the throttle when engaging the
clutch at starting and in slowing down to stop· the tractor.
Close the radiator blind if the engine is left idling ; and
Reduce engine speed when adjusting the radiator blind (suction of the
fan at high engine speed may cause the blind to jam).
Stopping the Tractor
· At the moment before coming to rest and while the foot brake is still
in action, depress .the clutch pedal, move the gear ler into neutral and
apply the foot brake by pressing on the pedal with the foot clear of the
release catch. The clutch pedal may then be released. As an additional
precaution, put the gear lever into bottom gear, particularly if it is necessary
to stop on a slope. Return the lever to neutral position before restarting
the engine.
Stop on level ground to refill with oil or water, so that the dipsticks
may read correctly.
On tractors :fitted with 6-speed gearboxes, the right-hand lever must
be moved into neutral;
Caution.
Never use the steering brakes to stop the tractor.
