Transfer Method
The transfer method defines the distribution of audio and video data in the network.
Multicast
The data packets are transferred via point-to-multipoint connection to a group of receivers
(clients) including the specified IP multicast address and port number.
The packets have to be transferred only once, the distribution to the members of the group
is done by specially configured routers.
A member of the group only receives the data packets if it is aware of the IP multicast ad-
dress and the appropriate application service is available with the specified port number.
IP multicast uses the address range from
224.0.0.0
to
239.255.255.255
(Class D).
Note that certain IP multicast address ranges are reserved for special purposes.
unicast
The data packets are transferred via point-to-point connection to exact one receiver (client)
in the network including the specified destination IP address and port number.
The receiver only receives the data packets if the appropriate application service is avail-
able with the specified port number.
