Electric Coil (continued)
Maintenance
A six monthly check should be performed as follows:-
1)
Isolate from mains supply.
2)
Check the heating elements for damage (i.e. cracks and ruptures).
3)
Check all metalwork for damage. (i.e. cracks and distortion).
4)
Check the element support and that all of the fixing screws are tight.
5)
Remove terminal cover.
6)
Remove any accumulation of dust and/or moisture.
7)
Check that the incoming cables are in good condition. Make sure that they are
firmly fixed and that the nuts are tight.
8)
Check the condition of the element terminal pin nuts and ensure that they are
tight. (The element terminal pins are very weak and therefore the nuts should be
checked with fingers. If they are loose tighten them down lightly with a spanner).
9)
Test the high temperature cut-out. This check is to be performed as follows:-
a)
Make a note of the preset cut-out temperature.
b)
With a small screwdriver turn the adjuster screw towards 0.
The cut-out should trip out at approximately 20ºC.
c)
Try to reset the cut-out.
The cut-out should not reset.
d)
Adjust the cut-out back to the preset temperature.
e)
Again try to reset the cut-out.
The cut-out should reset.
f)
If the cut-out fails to perform, as above, then it needs to be replaced.
10)
If everything is satisfactory then re-fit the terminal cover and switch on the mains
supply.
The thermal cut-out is fitted to prevent damage to the heater if the air supply is
interrupted. The cut-out must be wired in series with the operating coil of the controlling
contactor. This ensures that the heater will be isolated when the cut-out operates.
