Preamble
Data bits at the beginning of each block of
data, used for synchronization.
Punch-down
Block
Physical connection in a network wiring
closet.
Repeater
LAN signal regenerator. An Ethernet hub is a
type of repeater.
Router
A device for forwarding packets between
networks which uses higher-level network
protocols (such as TCP/IP or IPX) to
determine where packets should be sent.
Most routers are capable of forwarding traffic
to Wide Area Network (WAN) connections as
well as between LANs.
Segment
Part of an Ethernet or other network on which
all traffic is common to all nodes.
SLIP
Serial Line Internet Protocol; a method of
encoding TCP/IP for transmission over serial
lines or modems.
SNMP
The Simple Network Management Protocol;
an industry-standard protocol for remotely
monitoring and controlling network devices
from a Network Management System (NMS).
SNMP requests are usually transmitted using
TCP/IP, though other means are possible.
