WINCH OPERATION
Read all of the
beginning on page 33 before operating your winch.
NOTICE: Practicing operation and use of the winch before it is needed to perform a job is recommended.
Improper or irresponsible winch use can result in severe injury or death. Comply with all
winch instructions and warnings in this manual.
Since all winching situations are different, follow these important guidelines:
• Evaluate the winching operation before performing it.
• Proceed slowly and deliberately.
• Maintain constant awareness of your surroundings.
• Maintain constant awareness that the winch is very powerful.
• Change the winching strategy if the current strategy is not working.
• Seek assistance if needed.
1.
Inspect the vehicle, winch, winch cable, and winch controls for any signs of damage or parts in need of repair or
replacement before each use. Replace the cable if signs of wear or damage is visible. Never operate a winch in
need or repair or service.
2.
If pulling the vehicle itself, engage the neutral lock. If pulling another vehicle, apply the parking brake on the vehi-
cle performing the winching to prevent it from moving while winching. Use wheel chocks if needed.
3.
Use a hook strap when handling the hook. Never hook the winch cable to itself.
Never put your fingers into the hook. Doing so
could lead to severe injury.
a.
Attach the hook onto the load or use a tow strap or chain to
secure the load to the winch cable.
Do not use a recovery strap as a tow strap.
Recovery straps are designed to stretch so they store energy. The stored energy in the
recovery strap will release if the winch cable breaks. The use of recovery straps can
cause severe injury or death.
Do not hook the winch cable back onto itself. Doing so will damage
the winch cable and can result in winch cable failure.
Replace the winch cable at the first sign of damage to prevent severe
injury or death in the event of failure. Replace factory approved
replacement parts.
b.
If possible, keep the winch cable aligned with the centerline of the winching vehicle to
help maintain even spooling of the winch cable.
c.
If freeing a stuck vehicle by attaching to a tree, use an item such as a tow strap to avoid damaging the tree
during winch operation. Sharp cables and chains can damage or kill trees.
d.
The safety latch on the winch cable hook must be fully seated when the
load is attached.
e.
Never operate the winch with a damaged hook or latch. Damaged parts
must be replaced before winch operation.
4.
Never remove the hook strap from the hook until the operation is complete.
5.
Release the winch clutch and pull out the winch cable.
