SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE

7.  Place the new filter in an open pan with the open side facing up. 

Fill with new oil until the oil reached the bottom of the threads. 

Wait two minutes for the oil to be absorbed by the filter material.

8.  Apply a thin film of clean oil to the rubber gasket on the filter.
9.  Carefully install the new filter.
10.  Refill the engine with the recommended oil and check the oil 

level; refer to Checking and Adding Oil in the Assembly Section.

11.  Reinstall the oil filler cap/dipstick securely.
12.  Reconnect spark plug wire.

Air Cleaner

1.  Remove the air filter cover.
2.  To remove the air filter, lift the end of the filter. See Figure 24.

3.  Remove the pre-cleaner from the filter.
4.  To loosen debris, gently tap the filter on a hard surface. If the filter 

is excessively dirty, replace with a new filter.

5.  Wash the pre-cleaner in liquid detergent and water. Allow it to 

thoroughly air dry. 

Do not

 oil the pre-cleaner.

6.  Assemble the dry pre-cleaner to the filter.
7.  Install the filter into the engine base and push down until the filter 

snaps in place.

8.  Install the cover.

Spark Plug

WARNING

DO NOT check for a spark with the spark plug removed. DO NOT 
crank the engine with the spark plug removed.

WARNING

If the engine has been running, the muffler will be very hot. Be careful 
not to touch the muffler.

The spark plug should be checked every 25 hours and changed once 
a season or every 100 hours. To ensure proper engine operation, the 
spark plug must also be properly gapped and free of deposits.
1.  Remove the spark plug boot and use a spark plug wrench to 

remove the plug, Figure 25.

2.  Visually inspect the spark plug. Discard the spark plug if there is 

any apparent wear, or if the insulator is cracked or chipped. Clean 
the spark plug with a wire brush if it is to be reused.
