Engine fails to start

Throttle lever not in correct starting position

Choke not in the CHOKE position

Spark plug wire disconnected

Faulty spark plug

Fuel tank empty or stale fuel

Cannot pull recoil cord

Engine flooded
1.
Move throttle lever to START/RUN position.
2.
Move CHOKE to the CHOKE position.
3.
Connect wire to spark plug.
4.
Clean, adjust gap, or replace.
5.
Fill tank with clean, fresh gasoline.
6.
Obstruction lodged in impeller. Disconnect spark plug wire
and remove lodged object.
7.
Wait a few minutes to restart.
Engine runs erratically
1.
Unit running on CHOKE
2.
Spark plug wire loose
3.
Stale fuel
4.
Water or dirt in fuel system

Dirty air cleaner

Low engine RPM

Carburetor out of adjustment
1.
Move choke lever to the RUN position.

Connect and tighten spark plug wire.

Refill with fresh fuel.

Engine overheats

Engine oil level low

Air flow restricted

Fill engine with proper amount and type of oil.

Clean debris from around the engine’s cooling fins and
blower housing.
Engine hesitates at high RPMs

Spark plug gap set too close
1.
Remove spark plug and adjust gap.
Engine idles poorly

Fouled spark plug

Dirty air cleaner
1.
Replace spark plug and adjust gap.
2.
Replace air cleaner cartridge.
Excessive vibration
1.
Loose parts or damaged impeller
1.
Stop engine immediately and disconnect spark plug wire.
Contact a Sears or other qualified service dealer for repair.
Unit does not discharge
1.
Chute deflector clogged
2.
Foreign object lodged in impeller
3.
Low engine RPM

Stop engine immediately and disconnect spark plug wire.
Clean flail screen and inside of discharge opening.
2.
Stop engine and disconnect spark plug wire. Remove lodged
object.
3.
Always run engine at full throttle.
Rate of discharge slows considerably
or composition of discharged
material changes

Low engine RPM
2.
Chipper blade dull
1.
Always run engine at full throttle.
2.
Replace or sharpen chipper blade or contact a Sears or other
qualified service dealer for repair.
WARNING
Before performing any type of maintenance/service, disengage all controls and stop
the engine. Wait until all moving parts have come to a complete stop. Disconnect spark
plug wire and ground it against the engine to prevent unintended starting. Always wear
safety glasses during operation or while performing any adjustments or repairs.
