Intended use
The product is used for converting electrical network signals into optical signals (or vice versa).
The connection to an optical network is via an input / output for each POF cable (“POF” =
“Polymeric Optical Fibre”, optical
fi
bre made of plastic); a RJ-45 jack is used for connection to
a conventional copper cable network.
The POF / network converter’s power is supplied by the USB wall plug transformer included in
the delivery. Alternatively, a USB port that supplies the output current of 500 mA (e.g. the USB
port on a computer or a USB hub with its own power supply; but also the USB port on many
TVs, or similar devices) can be used.
Always observe the safety instructions and all other information included in these operating
instructions.

Safety Instructions
The warranty will be void in the event of damage caused by failure to observe
these safety instructions! We do not assume any liability for any resulting
damage!
We shall not accept liability for damage to property or personal injury caused
by incorrect handling or non-compliance with the safety instructions! In such
cases, the warranty will be null and void.
• The unauthorised conversion and/or modi
fi
cation of the product is not permitted for
safety and approval reasons (CE). Never dismantle the product.
• The product is not a toy. Devices operated using mains voltage must be kept out of
the reach of children. Therefore, be especially careful when children are around.
Use the product where it is out of the reach of children.
• The product is intended for use only in dry, indoor locations. No part of the product
should become damp or wet; never handle it if your hands are wet!
Wall plug transformers have the potential to cause a fatal electric shock!
• The product must not be exposed to extremes of temperature, direct sunlight,
vibrations or moisture.
• The design of the wall plug transformer complies with Protection Class II. Use only
a standard mains socket as the power source for the wall plug transformer.
The mains socket into which the wall plug transformer is plugged must be easily
accessible.
• Do not pull the wall plug transformer from the mains socket by pulling on the cable.
• If the wall plug transformer is damaged, do not touch it; there is danger to life from
electric shock!
Switch off the mains voltage to the mains socket to which the wall plug transformer
is connected (e.g. switch off at the corresponding circuit breaker or remove the
safety fuse and then switch off the RCD).
You can then unplug the wall plug transformer from the mains socket. Dispose of
the faulty wall plug transformer in an environmentally friendly way, do not use it any
more.
Replace it with a new wall plug transformer with the same speci
fi
cations.
• Do not leave packaging material carelessly lying around, since it could become a
dangerous plaything for children.
• Handle the product with care; it can be damaged by impacts, blows, or accidental
falls, even from a low height.
Connection
You need two POF / network converters and a two-core POF cable to set up an
optical network connection.
Of course, the POF / network converter can also be used along with a switch with
POF connection.
Connect the two leads of the POF cable to the POF / network converter.
To do this,
fi
rst remove the snap lock a bit out of the POF / network converter.
Separate the two leads of the POF cable from one another (for a length of approximately 5 cm).
Then connect the two leads of the POF cable all the way into the corresponding holes of the
POF / network converter.
Important!
The two holes are marked with an “R” (= “Receiver”) and a “T” (= “Transmitter”) (see
inscription on the snap lock).
Connect the two leads of the POF cable in a crossed manner.
This means that the “R” port on one POF / network converter must be connected
with the port “T” on a second converter (or a switch with POF input, etc.) and vice
versa.
Otherwise, the connection is not established.
Finally, press the snap lock
fi
rmly. This
fi
xes the two leads of the POF cable in the POF /
network converter
Never pull on the leads when the snap lock is pressed.
While this will not damage the snap lock, it creates an air gap at the cutting edge of
the POF cable, which decreases the attainable cable length or the data transfer rate.
Connect the RJ45 connector of the POF / network converter with your network, e.g. a switch,
network card, router, etc.
The USB power jack on the wall plug transformer must be connected to the low-voltage round
socket on the POF / network converter via the included USB power cable.
Plug the wall plug transformer into a mains socket. The POF / network converter is now ready
for use.
Tips and Notes
• Instead of using the supplied wall plug transformer, the POF / network converter may be
supplied with power via the USB port on a computer or a USB hub with its own power supply
unit.
Alternatively, a USB port of a TV, game console, etc. can be used.
The USB port must be able to supply a current of 500 mA.
• If another POF cable is used, make sure this has the following features:
- Outer diameter: 2.2 mm per lead
- Material type: PMMA SI
fi
bre
- Manufactured according to IEC 60794-2-41
• A POF cable can be cut off at any point using an appropriate POF cutter.
The cable must be cut properly and the cutting edge must be at a 90°-angle for
optimum light coupling or uncoupling. Therefore, never cut the POF cable using
scissors or a knife - use a POF cutter.
• Never bend a POF cable! The light that is transmitted through the POF
fi
bre cannot traverse
this bend.
The minimum bending radius of a POF cable is about 10 - 15 mm.
• The maximum cable length attainable by means of a POF cables depends on the number of
bends, the radii and optimum light coupling and uncoupling.
Therefore, be very careful when laying, cutting and connecting the cable.
