What impact does the growth cycle of the hair have on photo-epilation?
Every hair on our body has three growth
phases: the anagen, catagen and telogen
phases. These three phases play an important
role in the process of photo-epilation. The
anagen phase is the growth phase of the hair,
while the catagen and telogen phases are
both resting phases. The time the hair takes
to go through its follicular cycle varies widely
from one person to the next, and from one
part of the body to the next. Typically a full
cycle averages 18 to 24 months.
Most hair follicles are found at any one time in one of the two resting phases. During
these phases, the Lumilisse Hair Remover will have no eff ect on the hairs. The intense
pulsed light of the Lumilisse Hair Remover will only aff ect the hair that is in the anagen
phase. That is why a full treatment with the Lumilisse Hair Remover will take as long as
your own individual follicular cycle: You want to ensure that each hair gets exposed to
the intense pulsed light during its anagen phase.

Excessive redness and swelling
In some rare cases, treated skin may become unusually red and swollen. This reaction
is more common on sensitive areas of the body. The redness and the swelling should
disappear within 2 to 7 days. During this time, you should especially avoid any exposure
to the sun.
Infection
A skin infection is rare, but may occur after a burn or a lesion of the skin caused by the
Lumilisse Hair Remover.
Bruising
Very rarely, using the Lumilisse Hair Remover may cause some blue or purple bruising
which could last 5 to 10 days. As the blue disappears, the skin may take on a rusty color
(hyperpigmentation) that could be permanent.
Increased hair growth
It is rare to see an increase in the density of hair growth in a treated area. Hair grows in
cycles (see Section 5) and any increase in hair growth is generally temporary.
Please consult your doctor if you experience persistent or severe discomfort or
irritation during or after the Lumilisse treatment.
5. Intense Pulsed Light Hair Removal
Device Indications for Use:
The Lumilisse IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Hair Remover is an over-the-counter device
intended for the removal of unwanted hair.
IPL, a safe, clinically proven technology, will eliminate unwanted hair gently and painlessly,
leaving skin smooth and silky for a long time.
This epilation procedure produces a pulsed light that is absorbed by the melanin (the
pigment in your hair), and carried to the bulb, where it is transformed into heat. The
thermal eff ect painlessly destroys the hair and roots and prevents regrowth. This
scientifi cally proven technology gives quick and lasting results.
The Lumilisse IPL Hair Remover off ers a safe and long-lasting epilation in
the privacy and comfort of your own home.
The Lumilisse Hair Remover is a hair-removal device that eliminates unwanted hair from
the body (in particular, legs and arms), and from more sensitive areas (underarms, bikini
line, lower half of the face – below the cheekbones).
The Lumilisse Hair Remover can be used by adults aged 21 and older.
5.1 Long-lasting hair removal method with the Lumilisse Hair Remover
The Lumilisse Hair Remover is a long-lasting, personal photo-epilation device. The photo-
epilation procedure (intense pulsed light) is well known and safe to use. It has been widely
used by professionals for more than 15 years and clinical studies have proven that it is safe
and effective in gradual, but long-lasting hair removal.
How does the light eliminate hair?
Photo-epilation is based on the theory of selective photothermolysis which uses optical
energy to stop the growth of the hair. The pulsed light targets the pigment present in the
hair to get through to the root and prevent the hair from growing back. Melanin is the pig-
ment found in the hair, which first absorbs the light and then transforms the light into heat
in order to stop the hair growth. The more melanin in the hair (i.e., the darker the hair), the
more light it can absorb and the more efficient photo-epilation becomes.
