TIMING MARKS
This timing light is for use on 12 volt ignition systems only.
The exact moment when the spark plug ignites the air/fuel mixture to create an explosion and deliver the power to
the engine is called «timing».
Timing is given in degrees or linear measurement (e.g. millimeters) relative to the top dead center (TDC), of the
movement of the piston.
BTDC: Before top dead center (timing advanced).
ATDC: After top dead center ( timing retarded ).
Locate the timing marks, these are usually found on the fan pulley, vibration damper, or fl ywheel, refer to the
manuals from manufacturer for the exact position.
The specifi cation of the timing can generally be found in the vehicle’s manuals. See Figure 2 for examples of timing
marks.
