Separation (Rotors)
Approximately 70% of the grain needs to be separated from the straw by the time the
crop leaves the drum. This means that the remaining 30% has to be separated by the
rotors.
Rotors
It is important that the rotor speed is set correctly. This is when the remaining grain is
separated from the straw without damaging it. If the speed is too fast broken straw
and chaff is produced which could lead to overloading of the sieves. Changes should
be made at no more than 50rpm increments.
For LEXION 740 users without Variable Rotor Speed the rotor speed is adjusted by
moving the belt under the rear RHS panel.
Rotor cover plates
Most machines can be fitted with rotor concave cover plates or ‘bomb doors’. These
are operated via the HOTKEY in the cab. They should only be operated when threshing
has stopped except LEXION 770 which only requires the cutterbar to be stopped. Both
covers should be open when maximum separation is needed. In situations where the
straw is breaking up it may be beneficial to close either one or both of these to reduce
sieve overloading problems. Please operate the rotor cover plates at least once per
day to prevent adjustment issues.
Damp Conditions
The straw will only travel along the rotor at
one speed. This will differ for every crop and
machine. It could be anywhere in the speed
range of 600 – 1000rpm. To find the correct
speed, start with the rotor speed at 750rpm
and see how the machine ‘feels’. If the wrong
speed is chosen, a vibration can be felt
through the machine. Adjust the speed until
this has gone.
