These operating instructions should be read
in conjunction with, and in addition to, all
relative safety standards in force in the country
of use.
1. SAFETY
There is a serious risk of personal injury
if you do not follow the instructions as
detailed in this booklet.
DO NOT use this equipment until you
have read and fully understood these
instructions.
This equipment has been designed for
use by a competent person who has
undergone training and who has read and
understood the instructions.
ALWAYS wear practical, protective clothing,
gloves and footwear as a minimum.
DO NOT operate this equipment if you feel
ill, tired or are under the influence of
alcohol or drugs.
This equipment MUST NOT be used to
carry or lift personnel.
ALWAYS bear in mind your safety and the
safety of others while using this equipment.
2. OVERVIEW
• Designed to lift a single mild steel plate.
• Used to lift loads between the minimum and
maximum working load limit (W.L.L) as
marked on each clamp.
• Used on all hot rolled structural mild steel
plates up to a surface hardness of 300
Brinell / 32 Rockwell C .
• Lifts plate from the horizontal to the vertical
position and vice versa through 180
0
.
• Fitted with hold-open and lock-closed device
(except model 92 500).
3. LOAD DIAGRAMS WITH LIFTING
SLINGS VERTICAL (FIG.A)
Loads weighing the maximum W.L.L may be
lifted and turned through 180 o in the plane of
the clamp. Load must hang no more than 30
degrees when suspended by the clamp only.
(Fig A1). Loads weighing the maximum W.L.L
may be lifted within 15
o
as shown. (Fig A2).
4. OPERATING ENVIRONMENT
Plate Clamps should not be used if the surface
temperature of the material being lifted is
above +120
o
C. The ambient temperature of
the operating environment should not be lower
than -20
o
C and not be higher than +50
o
C.
5. FITTING INSTRUCTIONS
• Always check the operation of your lifting
clamp before use. Never use a worn or
damaged lifting clamp (See section 12 Care
& Maintenance).
• Check that the clamp is suitable for lifting
the type of plate required and that the plate
is free from grease, oil, paint and scale etc.
• The clamp can be fitted with handle above
or below the plate.
• Support the weight of the clamp (the lifting
sling must be slack) then fully turn the
locking lever clockwise to lock the jaws
open (fig. B).
• Position the clamp on the edge of the plate
over the centre of gravity and to the full
depth of the mouth (fig. C).
• Place the fixed jaw onto the plate and turn
the lever to the 'LOCK' position (fig. D).
• Check correct fitting and position before
lifting (fig. E).
6. LIFTING
• Never lift more than one plate at a time
(fig. E).
• For short plates, a single clamp can be
used. For long plates two clamps and a
lifting beam must be used (fig. F).
• If the Hook is too big, use a master link and
a drop chain fitted to a clamp with a chain
link (fig. G).
• Never exceed the maximum working load
limit or pick up loads weighing less than the
minimum working load limit as marked on
each clamp.
• Check position and fitting of clamp as
weight is applied (fig. H).
• Stand to one end of the plate so as too
judge and adjust the sling angle. It must
remain vertical.
• Check for obstacles prior to lift. Lift slowly
and smoothly at all times.
• Take extra care at the transition from
horizontal to vertical lifting (fig. I).
• Lifting slings must be vertical at all times
(fig. J).
• Always keep clear of the area below the load
while lifting and transporting.
• Take precautions to stop the load from
swinging (fig. K).
7. TRANSPORTING
• If guiding a load by hand, place the palm
of a gloved hand on top of the load, never
grip the load with fingers on the side or the
underside.
• Never stand under a suspended load.
Always stand clear when lifting, transporting
or lowering.
• Take precautions when transporting that the
plate will not collide with objects.
• Minimise load swing. Allow swing to die
down naturally. Never stop load swing with
your body (fig. K).
• Minimise the danger area by moving plates
as close to the ground as possible (fig. K).
8. LOWERING
• Do not lower if the locking lever is not in the
'LOCK' position. If this is the case reposition
the lever to the lock position (fig. M).
• Place loads down gently, do not lower
quickly onto the floor as the crane hook can
force open the clamp and release the plate
(fig. L).
9. RELEASE
• To release the plate, the lifting sling must
be sufficiently slack (fig. N) to allow the
hookring to be pushed down into the shell.
• Push the hookring down into the clamp
body while turning the locking lever (fig. O).
• The clamp can only be released when all
the load is removed.
• Do not force or hit the lever.
10. THE EFFECT OF WEAR
Constantly lifting the same thickness plate, lift-
ing other materials, curved plates or using a
clamp where the spring is worn all increases
wear on the teeth. Wear in the jaw teeth is
seen as a blunt flat at the tip of the tooth.
When the clamp reaches a point were it can
no longer grip the plate safely the clamp must
be replaced or repaired.
11. WEAR WIDTH
The maximum wear width should not exceed
the dimensions shown in the table.
Chipped teeth are only acceptable if the chip
is less than half the width of the tooth and the
adjoining teeth are undamaged (fig Q).
