CHARGING SYSTEM

7.13

GENERAL

The charging system consists of the alternator and regulator.
Charging system circuits are shown in

Alternator

The alternator consists of two main components:

●

The rotor which mounts to the engine sprocket shaft.

●

The stator which bolts to the engine crankcase.

Voltage Regulator

See

The voltage regulator is a series regulator

with shunt control. The circuit combines the functions of recti-
fying and regulating.

TROUBLESHOOTING

When the charging system fails to charge or does not charge
at a satisfactory rate, make the following recommended
checks.

Battery

Check for a weak or dead battery. See

. Bat-

tery must be fully charged in order to perform any electrical
tests.

Wiring

Check for corroded or loose connections in the charging cir-
cuit. See

Voltage Regulator Inspection

See

The voltage regulator base must have a

clean, tight connection for proper grounding. The harness is
grounded to the voltage regulator body. Check by using an
ohmmeter with one lead on a known good ground, such as
battery ground cable, and the other on the regulator base.

Connector plug to stator must be clean and tight.
