How do I use Solvy / Topping and

why do I have to use it?

What is Solvy? Solvy is a water soluble
stabilizer which can be used as a top-
ping or a stabilizer. Use as a design
template, as a pattern guide and a
stitch support. It’s ideal when you don’t
want any stabilizer to show on top or
bottom. Solvy has many different uses
and applications, but it’s most common
use is to make embroidering on fabric
easier by holding the fabric nap/pile
down by lying on top of the fabric.
For example, when sewing on a terry cloth towel, the embroidery will sew
out better when all the fibers or nap are laying flat. Fleece is another good
example of when to use Solvy. Putting a piece of Solvy on top of the fleece
helps hold down the fuzzy fibers so your embroidery looks clean and crisp.
Another important application is its use on Pique golf shirts. Without Solvy,
the open weave of the Pique makes the embroidery look uneven or can
give a sunken look to the design. Using Solvy makes the design stand up
and stand out.
Other applications include: wedding gowns, handkerchiefs, silk, velvet,
and in lace-making.

How do I remove Solvy?

Remove the excess Solvy by tearing it away in the same fashion as you
would with tearaway backing. If you have excess Solvy remaining, simply
use a spray bottle filled with water and spritz the garment. You can also
remove Solvy by using steam or simply wash the garment.
