CONTROL INSTALLATION

Install the controls and wire them as shown. Use the following guidelines:

IMPORTANT:

80 cfm fans must use SMSC80 control.

110 cfm fans must use SMSC110 control.

• Use minimum 75

0

C rated electrical wiring cable.

• The controls install like normal switches except for the need of a neutral wire. Run

the neutral wire to each wall control location. This may be a code requirement or
a regular practice in your area - but unless explicitly specified, it may be omit-
ted. This control will consume energy and needs a neutral wire to complete the
circuit.

• Specify the installation of deep J-boxes in all locations where the communicating

controls will be used. While the Broan SmartSense

®

controls will fit in the spacing

offered by all North American electrical boxes, the deep models have extra work-
ing space and make the installation go a little easier. Deep boxes only cost a few
cents more than normal depth models. Look for single-gang boxes that are 22 cu.
in. or higher and double-gang boxes that are 36 cu. in. or higher.

• ALL

controls and coupler must be grounded.

CONTROL OPERATION

HOW THE LED OPERATES

When the system is running the fan automatically, the LED will be
off with a quick blink each second. The control also uses this mode
to indicate when it is in the Program Mode.

When the control is off (turned off manually or by the program), the
status LED will be not illuminated.

When the control is manually turned on, the LED will be on.

HOW THE MASTER & SLAVE CONTROLS WORK

The controls in a system are defined as a Master and Slaves. Any of
the SMSC080 or SMSC110 controls can be designated as a Master.
All controls initially (out-of-the-box) function as a Master.

Master Control

The Master is the control used to initiate the linking and program-
ming process. Once a control is linked to another control, a Master
Slave relationship occurs.

The Master control should always be installed in the home’s master
bathroom. Installing the Master in the master bathroom makes it
easier for the homeowner to determine the location of the Master
control. Only the Master control can place the system in vacation
mode, disable mode, change the system level, etc.

The Master control does all the calculations required to determine
how much fan on time is needed to meet a home’s ventilation re-
quirements. Ventilation requirements are determined by the system
level setting. The other controls (Slaves) will be linked to the Master
so that they only operate when commands are received from the Mas-
ter control or when manually operated.

Slave Controls

Slave controls accept instructions from the Master control. Slave
controls also communicate to the Master when the home’s occupants
manually operate fans. The time that the fans are operated manually
is credited towards the home’s ventilation requirements determined
by the system level setting.

HOW TO FORM A NETWORK

Controls are linked together so that automated commands for the
Broan SmartSense

®

network are sent between Master controls and

Slave controls. Slave controls will also communicate to the Master
when the homes occupants manually operate fans. The time that the
fans are operated manually is credited towards the homes ventilation
requirements determined by the system level setting.

Program Mode

At the Master control (in the master bathroom), use a screwdriver tip
to gently press and hold the SET button for 4 seconds, then release.
The SET button is the clear button at the bottom of each control
(reference drawing of controller face). LED will flash continuously to
indicate Program Mode. Repeat this procedure if LED does not flash
continuously.

Linking Controls (Slaves)

1. While in Program Mode, press and release SET button on Master

control gently with a screwdriver (approx. 1 sec.). A flashing LED
will indicate if the Master control is in Program Mode.

2. At the Slave control use a screwdriver tip to gently press and hold

SET button until the Slave fan turns on (approx. 3 sec.). Release
SET button. When a link is established both the Master and Slave
fans will turn on.

3. The Master’s fan will turn off automatically after approx. 15 sec.

4. After the Master’s fan turns off, press the Slave control’s paddle

OFF to turn the Slave fan off.

5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 to link additional Slaves.

6. When you have finished linking all Slaves, press and release SET

button once at the Master control to exit Program Mode. Master
control LED will turn off after exiting Program Mode.
