Only BMW-approved balance weights
for alloy wheels are to be used on the
black-painted aluminium (lightweight)
spare wheel. Do not attempt to use
hammer-on steel balance weights on
these wheels.
Driving with the compact spare
wheel fitted
Drive very carefully and do not exceed a
road speed of 80 km/h (50 mph).
You must expect the car's road behav-
iour to be different, for example braking
action, braking distances or different
self-steering effects when close to the
handling limit.
These changes in road behaviour
become more evident if the car's other
wheels are fitted with winter tyres.
Only one compact spare wheel is
to be fitted at a time. Fit a conven-
tional wheel and tyre again at the earli-
est possible opportunity. Make sure
that the tyre pressures are correct: see
page 24.

Safety tyres*
The symbol identifying safety tyres is a
circle with the letters RSC (short for
"Runflat System Component") on the
tyre sidewall. A safety tyre consists of
the self-supporting tyre and a special
wheel rim. The tyre is reinforced, so
even if it deflates it remains controllable
and the car is conditionally drivable.
The car is equipped with a tyre pres-
sure monitoring system (RDC), which
indicates tyre deflation.
On account of the reinforced
sides, you cannot usually tell
whether a safety tyre is deflated simply
by looking at it.
<
With a burst tyre
If a puncture or similar tyre failure
occurs, the red warning icon lights up.
In addition a warning signal is heard.
For further details on the tyre pressure
monitoring system RDC, see page 84.
Carefully reduce speed to below
80 km/h (50 mph), avoiding pronounced
braking and steering manoeuvres while
doing so.
If you cannot immediately see which
tyre is defective, check the pressure in
all four tyres.
Have a new tyre fitted by BMW
Service. For safety reasons, do
not have safety tyres repaired. BMW
Service has full information on how to
handle safety tyres and is equipped
with the requisite special tools.
<
Please consult your BMW Service
when it is time to have summer or
winter tyres fitted.

Resuming a journey despite a
damaged tyre
Under certain circumstances and
depending on load and the severity of
tyre damage, a car fitted with safety
tyres can be driven at speeds up to
