101073 Rev. B, 3/99
NOTE: All piping must be clean of foreign debris,
such as: oil, grease and shavings. All
connections must be tight to prevent
leaks.
2. Swing joints or flex pipe must be used at the ends
of the horizontal pipe between the dispenser and
the tank. See Figure 4. These joints prevent
leaks which might develop through ground
movement from settling of the tank, frost heaving
of the ground or pump island settling. The joint
under the dispenser also aids proper alignment of
the product union or coupling.
Self-Contained
1. Dig a trench between the tanks and the dispenser
foundation. It must be deep enough to place the
product pipe at least 18 inches below the surface
of the ground (at its highest point). The slope
upwards from the tank should be 1-1/2” to 2” per
10 feet. The trench should be as straight as
possible to avoid as many elbows and bends in
the line as possible. All piping must conform to
local fire regulations.
2. Use new 1-1/2” or larger EPA approved pipe.
3. Static lift on self-contained units should not exceed
10 feet (vertical distance between product level in
the storage tank and the center of the pumping unit
rotor.
4. Install an in line vertical check valve underneath
the dispenser.
5. Avoid asphalt drive surfaces covering the product
pipes. Asphalt increases heat absorption causing
vapor lock.

NOTE: Make sure the installation conforms to the new EPA regulations for underground storage tanks.
6. Only one self-contained dispenser is permitted
for each product pipe. Do not use a tee to
connect two pumps to one product pipe.
NOTE:
For information and requirements on
above-ground tank installations with Bennett
self-contained dispensers, see page 4A.
Remote
Install an approved emergency shear valve, designed
to close automatically in the event of severe impact
or fire exposure, in the dispenser supply line at the
base of the dispenser. The valve will also permit
safe inspection and maintenance. Follow the
installation instructions for the valve being installed.
See Figure 5.
