Performance of Measurements
6.0 Performance of Measurements
6.1 Temperature Compensation
As the resistance and thus the length or the cross
section of a conductor to be measured depends on
the temperature, a compensation of the tempera-
ture must be carried out prior to performing a mea-
surement.
The UNITEST Cable Length Meter 3000 offers three
options for temperature compensation perfor-
mance.
6.1.1 Internal Temperature Compensation
During internal temperature compensation the tem-
perature of the instrument is measured by means of
the integrated temperature probe. This temperature
is included in the length or cross section measure-
ment.
Once the UNITEST Cable Length Meter 3000 is
switched on the internal temperature compensation
is always active.
"
Store the UNITEST Cable Length Meter near the
conductor to be measured until the instrument
temperature has adapted to the UUT (duration
approx. 2h).
"
Proceed with the measurements as described in
section 6.2.
To comply with accuracy values it is required
to store the UNITEST Cable Length Meter near
the conductor or cable under test for a mini-
mum of 2 hours prior to performing the mea-
surement.
6.1.2 External Temperature Compensation
The external temperature compensation is per-
formed using an external calibration cable (com-
pensation ring). Here, the calibration ring tempera-
ture is included in the length and cross section
measurement.
"
Store the calibration cable for temperature com-
pensation (compensation ring) near the con-
ductor to be measured minimum 15 min. prior
to measurement.
"
Switch on UNITEST Cable Length Meter press-
ing the
key.
"
Connect the red test leads to red sockets and the
black test leads to black sockets.
"
Connect the UNITEST Cable Length Meter to the
compensation ring using two alligator clamps.
"
Press the
and
keys. The UNITEST
Cable Length Meter measures the compensa-
tion ring temperature and calibrates the mea-
surement range. The message ''Tcal'' is dis-
played.
"
The UNITEST Cable Length Meter is calibrated
and the measurements can be performed, as de-
scribed in section 6.2.
To comply with accuracy values it is required
to store the compensation ring near the con-
ductor or cable under test for a minimum of 15
min. prior to performing the measurement.
