Final Note:
This paper is NOT intended to show disadvantages of Cisco switches. Differences between
Avaya and Cisco methods and their consequences needed explanation to prevent implementation and
maintenance issues for Avaya customers. Cisco methods and commands are stated in this paper because
Cisco is the predominant infrastructure of many Avaya customers.

Future
Directions
Power over Ethernet is still young and is changing. The IEEE 802.3af standard is being supplemented with
a newer, but not yet ratified, IEEE 802.3at standard. This newer standard defines “double PoE” and seeks
to raise the limit of 15.4 Watts per port to 30 Watts and possibly even higher to 60 Watts. The goal of this
wattage increase is to power many more IP appliances. Eventually, notepads, USB hubs and other devices
may be powered over the Ethernet.
Avaya will continue to drive and support future standards for power over Ethernet and other applicable
standards in the data arena.
