6.3 Hardware Diagnostics
If you suspect a malfunction despite the absence of any diagnostic messages on the HHT follow Table
6-1 described here to verify that transmitter hardware and process connections are in good working
order.

With HART
Communicator
Loop Wiring
y
Check for a minimum of 250 ohms resistance
between the power supply and HHT.
y
Check for adequate voltage to the transmitter.
The transmitter always requires 11.9 ~ 45 Vdc.
y
Check for intermittent shorts, open circuits, and
multiple grounds.
Sensor Input Failure
y
Connect HHT and enter the Transmitter test mode
to isolate a sensor failure.
Loop Wiring
y
Check for dirty or defective terminals,
interconnecting pins, or receptacles.
Power Supply
y
Check the output voltage of the power supply at
the transmitter terminals. It should be 11.9 to 45
Vdc in spite of loop scale.
High Output
Electronics Module
y
Connect HHT and enter the Transmitter test mode
to isolate module failure. Check the sensor limits
to ensure calibration adjustments are within the
sensor range.
Loop Wiring
y
Check the output voltage of the power supply at
the transmitter terminals. It should be 11.9 to 45
Vdc.
y
Check for intermittent shorts, open circuits, and
multiple grounds.
y
Check for proper polarity at the signal terminals.
y
Incase measuring electric current while digital
communication, output appear -0.013mA
Erratic Output
Electronics Module
y
Connect HHT and enter the Transmitter test mode
to isolate an electronics mode failure.
Sensor Element
y
Connect HHT and enter the Transmitter test mode
to isolate a sensor failure.
y
Check the PV to see if it is out of range.
Loop Wiring
y
Check for adequate voltage to the transmitter.
The transmitter always requires 11.9 ~ 45 Vdc.
y
Check for intermittent shorts, open circuits, and
multiple grounds.
y
Check polarity of singal terminal
y
Check the loop impedence.
Low Output or
No Output
Electronics Module
y
Connect HHT and check the sensor limits to
ensure calibration adjustments are within the
sensor range.
