Finishing Up
At the end of a work shift, clean and care for the
machine before leaving the work site.
◆
Finishing the grinding operation for the day
involves the following steps:
1.
Shut down the machine.
2.
Clean, service, and inspect the machine.
3.
Log any maintenance and performance issues.
4.
Lock up and secure the machine.
These steps are explained in this section.
Shutting Down
Perform these procedures after you have shut down
from a normal period of operation, such as after a regu-
lar work shift.
◆
To shut down the machine:
1.
Stop feeding material to the machine. Run it until
the hopper and conveyors are empty.
2.
If the slide gate is closed, move the hydraulic con-
trol lever labeled
S
LIDE
G
ATE
as necessary to open
the gate. Run the feed chain forward for a few min-
utes to clear as much material as possible.
N
OTE
:
Opening the slide gate helps remove accumu-
lated material from the lower chain deck of the feed
chain.
3.
At the control panel, turn the
E
NGINE
speed switch
to the
(Decrease) position until the engine is
running at low idle (RPMs stop decreasing).
4.
Press the
F
EED
system
(Stop) button.
5.
Press the
C
LUTCH
button one time to disengage it.
When the green light goes off, the clutch has disen-
gaged.
1
WARNING
Crushing hazard. Rotor and belts will continue to
run for 1-2 minutes after the clutch is released.
Do not approach the grinding area until the rotor
and belts have completely stopped.
6.
Press the
D
ISCHARGE
C
ONVEYOR
button to turn
off the discharge conveyor.
7.
Run the engine at low idle for 5 minutes to cool it
down.
8.
Stop the engine—Turn the
E
NGINE
Start/Stop
switch to the
(Stop) position.
◆
To clean, service, and inspect the machine:
1.
Clean all dust and debris from under, on, or around
the machine.
•
Pay special attention to the turbocharger, the
exhaust system, and the bearing housings. Dirt
buildup can insulate bearings, reducing their
ability to shed heat.
•
Clean the machine thoroughly to prevent
buildup of combustible materials, such as mate-
rial fines and spills. These can fuel a fire or
even ignite a fire if oil-based products have
been spilled onto the machine, the soil, or the
processed materials in the area.
Be sure to clean material from the belt guards
and anvil housing.
•
A clean machine at the end of a shift also has
value in helping you discover and take care of
small maintenance issues while they are still
minor, saving future downtime and parts costs.
2.
Fill the fuel tank before leaving the machine for
long periods.
•
Keep the fuel tank filled.
•
Avoid spilling dirt, dust, or other debris into the
tank. Make sure the drop-in strainer is installed
in the fuel fill receptacle. Screws hold this
strainer in place.
•
Lock the fuel cap in place to prevent vandalism
or theft.
3.
Fill the water pump sprayer tank. In cold weather,
add antifreeze to the water tank.
4.
Perform “After-Shutdown Inspection” on page 83.
5.
Perform “Daily Checks for Wear” on page 76.
6.
Perform or request any needed maintenance.
7.
Note machine condition and any needed repairs in
the machine’s maintenance log.
8.
Lock up and secure the machine (see “Securing the
Machine” on page 83).
