Figure 21: Impact Release System Latch Assembly
Important
Any time the IRS reduces engine speed, shut down
and lock out the machine and inspect for damage
before operating again.
The impact release system can operate in either of two-
modes:
•
IRS enabled
•
IRS disabled (float)
IRS Enabled mode is useful when there is a high value
on consistent, clean finished product with uniform siz-
ing, such as when grinding green waste for compost or
for making fuel (hog fuel or wood debris fuel).
To determine the status of the IRS Trip Switch, check
the Machine Status Page on the control panel display.
The operator will typically set the IRS Trip Switch to
Disabled at the display screen if the machine is to be
operated in float mode. This prevents potentially fre-
quent engine slowdowns triggered by an active IRS trip
switch.
IRS Enabled Mode
In this mode, the IRS works as described under “Impact
Release System” on page 23. The IRS Trip Switch
should always be enabled in this mode.
IRS Disabled (Float) Mode
If desired, the IRS can be mechanically disabled to
allow the anvil to “float,” which means it be held down
only by its own weight. In this mode, ungrindable
objects are most easily ejected by the IRS because no
spring pressure is holding the anvil housing down.
To set the IRS to run in float mode, a spacer must be
removed from the IRS carriage assembly. Instructions
for disabling the IRS are in Section 5000 of the
6700B
Maintenance Manual
.

OTE
:
Anvil “float” mode is not the same as compression
roll “float” mode. Compression roll float is explained under
“Compression Roll” on page 20.
Float mode is useful when the feed material may con-
tain large amounts of ungrindable pieces or when fast
material reduction is a greater priority than a uniform
finished size.
Important
No Shutdown protection is provided when the IRS
Trip Switch is Disabled. When operating with the
IRS disabled, a non-grindable object in the feed
could seriously damage your machine.
Be prepared to quickly shut down the machine if
you hear an ungrindable object in the grinder. After
shutdown, inspect for damage.

:
If the air bag option is installed and float mode is
desired, use minimal air bag pressure.
