Grates must be inspected for wear on a regular basis
(see “Daily Checks for Wear” on page 76). Grates #2,
#3, and #4 can be removed and installed through the
side access cover. For instructions on changing grates,
refer to Section 5000 in the
6700B Maintenance Man-
ual .
Optional grates are available for a wide range of mate-
rials and size reduction requirements.
Impact Release System
The Impact Release System (IRS) works by allowing
the anvil housing to pivot upward when an ungrindable
object strikes the anvil (Figure 20).
Upward anvil movement is mechanically regulated by a
spring-loaded roller and plunger arrangement
(Figure 21). The spring holds the anvil in normal oper-
ating position. When the anvil is struck by an ungrind-
able object, the spring is compressed while the anvil
housing rises to allow the object to escape the grinding
area.
An object striking the anvil with sufficient force will
push up the anvil housing enough to fully compress the
spring and cause the anvil housing to open fully. This
allows a large or heavy object to escape, keeping
machine damage to a minimum (Figure 22, Figure 23,
and Figure 24).
When the anvil housing opens, the roller rolls along the
plunger and depresses it. If depressed far enough, the
plunger will trip the IRS limit switch.
The amount of force required to raise the anvil housing
can be adjusted. Refer to Section 5000 in the
6700B
Maintenance Manual.
If the anvil has opened far enough to trip the limit
switch, the control system:
• Signals the engine to idle speed (the rotor slows
down as the engine does)
• Triggers an alarm and displays a message on the
control display screen
• Signals the feed system to stop, reverse briefly, and
then stop and wait
