Calculation of maximum transmission distances between nodes

The maximum transmission distance between equipment nodes will depend on two factors,

(i)

the transmission loss between equipment nodes

(ii)

the optical dynamic range of the equipment

The transmission loss between nodes should include:

-

fibre transmission loss (dB/km)

-

jointing splice loss (number of splices/km X max splice loss) (dB/km)

-

connector loss associated with any patching (dB)

-

excess loss or spare margin allowance (dB)

-

maintenance margin allowance to account for future cable repairs (dB)

As these parameters are site specific all calculations in this section relate to the optical dynamic range
between nodes in dB rather than distance in kilometres as distance can only be calculated if the all the
parameters above are known.

The optical minimum dynamic range of the equipment is 20dB. This relates to two units which are
optically adjacent (this may be different to physically adjacent) which are operating on the same
wavelength pair.

If more than 8 video signals are incorporated on the same fibre and multiple wavelengths are used,
the calculation is still based on 20dB between nodes of the same wavelength. However as optical
signals pass through nodes not of the same wavelengths then they are not regenerated and suffer up
to a 4 dB loss.
