1. Download the Latest CION firmware.
Current and past releases of CION firmware are available from AJA's website. To get the
firmware, point your browser to:
www.aja.com/en/support/cion
Once you’re at the update page, CION firmware files can be selected to download to your
Mac or PC for upgrading you’re CION.
2. Unpack the Software
CION software update files are “ZIP” files, which you can open with a number of standard
and third-party applications. In some cases, these files may “decompress” automatically,
such as when using Safari and Mac OS X. The firmware image that you’ll install on CION is
a file with a name like CION_1.0.0.153.bin or similar.
Depending on your PC or Mac operating system settings, the “.bin” extension may not be
visible to you in a file directory.
Uploading and installing the firmware update only requires a PC or Mac that can “see”
the CION via its ethernet connection. To install the firmware:
1. Be sure that you have configured your IP address information so that you can see
CION with your web browser.
2. Once you have entered CION's IP address, choose the “Update Firmware” page link
on the left side of any CION web page.
3. Click the “Browse...” button to select the file you previously downloaded. For
example: CION_1.0.0.153.bin file.
4. When you have selected a valid CION .bin image file, click the “Upload” button in the
web browser.
The file you select will upload to CION and be tested for validity. Incomplete, corrupted,
or non-CION firmware files will be rejected.
5. Agree to the steps and confirmation prompts as they are presented. Wait for the
procedure to complete—it will take only a few minutes.
When done, CION will prompt you to restart your machine. After restart, CION will be
running the new software. Progress is shown on the front panel.
6. Once these steps are complete, CION will be running the firmware you just uploaded
until the next time you upgrade it.
NOTE: You may ensure the new software is running by bringing up the CION web page again. The
software version is displayed at the top of all web screens. If for some rare reason it didn't
update, you can then run through the update steps again.
NOTE: On some browsers, the Retry page may appear even though the firmware upgrade was
successful. If this occurs, before clicking on retry, refresh the web page and check the version
number. If the new version number appears at the top of the page, the firmware upgrade was
successful. If the old version appears, click Retry.
If there is a power outage or glitch during the firmware download, CION will boot the
older software version and the upgrade process can then be re-started. This happens
because CION has been designed with a safety feature where an internal “safe” copy of
the previous software is retained in the event the updating process fails.
Caution! AJA recommends you only update the CION when on mains power, or with a
fully charged battery.
