Shear Safety
Safety During Operations (continued)
Be aware of conditions affecting direction of fall
Trees typically fall in the direction of shear blade travel
Some conditions cause the tree to fall elsewhere such as
Wind
Sloping ground
Tree trunk not vertical
Obstructions such other trees
Position the machine to avoid trees falling overhead
Backhoes and Excavators:
Drag the tree closer to increase lift capacity before lifting
Draw the load close and center it before lifting
Beware of "Strain Energy"
Trees and branches under a load are like compressed springs
Leaning trees
Heavy branches
The energy released when the support is cut can be significant
Thrown objects (not just the tree)
Trunk or branches springing suddenly
