The cameras WILL be damaged if not handled properly. Additionally, the damage
may not be immediately apparent and may appear at a later date once the head
has entered service.
Static damaged read heads may read documents but performance will be degraded for poorly printed or
damaged documents.
In order to minimise the chance of damage it is sensible to fit the head cable as
soon as the head is removed from its packaging. This minimises the chance of
static reaching the pins during handling but is no substitute for implementing a
proper anti-static manufacturing process.
Note that a grounded metal plate is not a proper anti-static workstation. There
should be around one Megohm impedance between the work surface and ground.
This limits the current surge when static is dissipated.
There have been a number of revisions of read head identified by the first digit of the serial number (e.g.
3EH00001 where the 3 is the revision). Any read head with the same revision is interchangeable however
generally different revisions are not interchangeable.
Your production process should ensure that read heads of different revisions are
separated and only used with the appropriate revision of VC27 or VC27U PCB.

Connector Recommendations
The read head is supplied with a non-polarised pin header to minimise the connector footprint.
If your mechanical assembly has sufficient space, the read head can be supplied (on request to 3M and at
additional cost) with a polarising shroud. This then allows the use of a cable with polarised connectors to
prevent incorrect connection to the VC27U OEM board.
The read head will be damaged if the connector is reversed or misaligned.
The read head is marked with a red dot to indicate the pin 1 end of the header.
Care should be taken when connecting polarised connectors to the VC27U OEM
board. If the connector is forced on the wrong way around, a large leverage force
is generated on the solder joints, which can cause them to crack.
Once cracked the joint may fail immediately, or at a later date due to oxidisation of the
exposed surfaces.
