3. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Viking Quick Response Ordinary Haz-
ard Dry Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers
are thermosensitive glass-bulb spray
sprinklers suitable for use in areas sub-
ject to freezing. They are designed for dry
systems and preaction systems where it
is necessary to prevent water or conden-
sation from entering the supply nipples
before the sprinklers operate. They may
also be installed in spaces subject to
freezing and supplied from a wet system
in an adjacent heated area. Large orifice
dry sprinklers allow greater flows at lower
pressures than standard orifice dry sprin-
klers.
The sprinklers are of the Model M design
with a horizontal sidewall deflector and a
glass bulb operating element that meets
the response criteria for quick response
sprinklers. Viking dry horizontal sidewall
sprinklers are available in finishes and
temperature ratings to meet design re-
quirements.
The sprinkler assembly features a
sealed brass inlet and a durable
threaded steel barrel with an Electrode-
posited Epoxy Base coating. The seal at
the threaded end of the assembly is held
in place by force transmitted from the
compression screw, through the glass
bulb and internal parts, onto a special
sealing spring. During fire conditions,
the heat-sensitive liquid in the glass bulb
expands, causing the glass to shatter,
releasing the internal parts to open the
waterway. Water flowing through the
sprinkler orifice strikes the sprinkler de-
flector, forming a uniform spray pattern
to extinguish or control the fire.
The Viking Quick Response Ordinary
Hazard Dry Horizontal Sidewall Sprin-
kler may be installed with the barrel ex-
posed (refer to Figure 4 on page 106 o),
or with one of two escutcheon styles:

For recessed installations, a recessed
style escutcheon with up to 5/8" (15,8
mm) adjustment (see Figure 1 on page
106 m), is available.
•
For standard installations, the sprinkler
is available with an adjustable, surface-
mounted escutcheon, finished to allow
up to 2" (50,8 mm) of adjustment (see
Figures 2 and 3 on page 106 n).
Both escutcheon styles slide over the
sprinkler deflector, allowing installation
of the escutcheon after the wall finish is
applied.
Viking dry horizontal sidewall sprinklers
are available in ¼" (6,35 mm) increments
for the recessed style, and in ½" (12,7
mm) increments for the adjustable stan-
dard escutcheon style, and the plain bar-
rel style, installed with no escutcheon.
These sprinklers may be ordered in min-
imum lengths from 1-1/2" (38,1 mm) for
the adjustable standard style, 3" (76,2
mm) for the plain barrel style, and 3-1/4"
(82,5 mm) for the adjustable recessed
style. They have listings and approvals
with a maximum length of 45-1/2" (1 156
mm) for the adjustable standard style*,
47" (1 194 mm) for the plain barrel style*,
and 47-1/2" (1 207 mm) for the adjust-
able recessed style*.
* Lengths exceeding the standard length are avail-
able, with no approvals, on a “made-to-order” ba-
sis:

Recessed Dry HSW up to 65-1/2” (1 664 mm).
•
Adjustable Standard Dry HSW up to 63-1/2” (1
613 mm).
•
Plain Barrel Dry HSW up to 65” (1 651 mm).
