Appendix G. Bluetooth Communications
G-1. Overview
Bluetooth
®
wireless technology is a short-range communications technol-
ogy intended to replace the cables connecting portable and/or fixed de-
vices while maintaining high levels of security. The key features of
Blue-
tooth
technology are robustness, low power, and low cost. The
Bluetooth
specification defines a
uniform structure for a wide range of devices to connect and communicate with each other.
As used in the SonTek RiverSurveyor/RiverCat systems, Bluetooth is a radio frequency teleme-
try system that provides serial data transmission and reception without a wire. Bluetooth operates
at 2.4 GHz as a spread spectrum radio and draws its power from a laptop USB port. The maxi-
mum range has been tested to verify a 200-m line-of-site distance when the laptop and the sur-
veying instrument each has a dipole antenna.
The Bluetooth radio modems used in the RiverSurveyor/RiverCat systems come from the factory
paired. They are ready to be plugged into the computer and should readily communicate with the
Mini-ADP system. Since the connection essentially is accessing a serial port, no specific Blue-
tooth driver is needed. A CD has been provided with the necessary driver information for serial-
to-USB users. No ADP software or firmware revisions are required to work with the Bluetooth.
The Bluetooth telemetry feature comes standard as a part of the RiverSurveyor Mini-ADP sys-
tem and the RiverCat system (3.0, 1.5, or 1.0-MHz acoustic frequency).

Table G-1. Bluetooth Radio Modem Specifications
Power
The Bluetooth radio modem runs on 5V power supplied through a USB ca-
ble adapter that plugs into the radio.
Class 1 Device
The paired Bluetooth radio modems tr18 dBm (63 mW) of power,
which is the highest amount of power for all Bluetooth classes.
Certification
FCC and CE
Operating Temperature
-10 to +55°C
Drivers
No external Bluetooth drivers are required. However, a driver is required
when using the serial-to-USB adapter we supply with each radio. This driver
is supported within Windows and is also available on the RiverSurveyor CD.
Bluetooth Version
v1.2
Transmit Range
200 m (656 ft)
Power Consumption
The Bluetooth radio modem is specified to consume 0.5 W (100 mA @ 5
VDC) maximum while in operation.
