NOTE:

Tighten the nut four turns after it contacts the
spring.

Measure the clearance (M) between the
gauge pin and the press plate.

Select the forward gear shims (T1).

NOTE:

The sum of T1 and M should not be more
than M0.

Backlash

Measuring the forward gear backlash

Remove the water pump assembly.

NOTE:

Do not remove the oil seal housing in this
procedure.

Set the gear shift to the neutral position
at the lower unit.

Install the special service tools so that it
pushes against the propeller shaft.

NOTE:

Tighten the universal puller while turning the
drive shaft until the drive shaft can no longer
be turned.
