PROBLEM
POSSIBLE CAUSE
SOLUTION
Motor does
not start.
1. Power cord or extension
cord damaged or not properly
plugged in.
1. Check the power cord, extension cord, power
plug, and the power outlet. Make sure the tool
is properly plugged in. Do not use the tool if
any cord is damaged.
2. Low voltage.
2. Check that the circuit is providing 120V
power.
3. Defective power switch,
defective motor or wiring,
defective capacitor, short
circuit, or loose connections.
3. Stop using the tool and call 1-800-232-1195
for customer service.
Grinding noise coming
from drive system.
1. Insufficient grease applied
to gearing as gears wear in.
1. The gears will wear in as the machine is
used. Some noise is normal. Turn the machine
OFF and unplug it. Remove the gear cover (part
4270-006) and apply general-purpose or white-
lithium grease to the gears.
Motor overheats.
1. Motor overloaded.
1. Reduce load on motor – reduce pressure on
workpiece.
2. Extension cord too long, or
of insufficient gauge.
2. Utilize an extension cord of appropriate
gauge and length, or plug tool directly into
outlet (see page 8).
Grinding wheel not
rotating smoothly or
evenly.
1. Wheel is improperly
installed.
1. Re-install the wheel according to the
instructions on page 20.
2. Wheel is worn out or
imbalanced.
2. Replace wheel.
3. Spindle is not straight.
3. Stop using the tool and call 1-800-232-1195
for customer service.
Stropping wheel
performance decreases.
1. Improper wheel preparation
(lack of oil or honing paste).
1. Prepare the wheel according to the
instructions on page 15.
2. Damaged wheel.
2. Replace wheel.
Wavy finish on the
surface of a workpiece.
1. Machine is vibrating.
1. Make sure the machine is securely positioned
on a level surface.
2. Workpiece is not held in
place firmly.
2. Make sure you are holding the workpiece or
jig firmly.
3. Wheel face is uneven.
3. Dress grinding wheel according to the
instructions on page 19.
