6. Multi-Stage System Operation

The relays that will operate the existing fossil fuel furnace and A/C
to provide 2

nd

stage heating and/or cooling are already installed in

the  Well-Connect  control  box.  Simply  remove  the  front  service
panel of the Well-Connect, and just to the left of the control box you
will see a small white terminal strip (next to the black hour meter)
with four wire terminals marked R-W-G-Y. (Figure 7)

Figure 7

Run a piece of 18 AWG thermostat wire between the Well-Connect
and the existing furnace. For 2-stage heating only you will need just
2  conductors.  If you want 2-stage heating and 2-stage cooling you
will need a total of 4 conductors. Connect separate conductors from
the terminals on the Well-Connect strip to the matching terminals
on  the  furnace  low  voltage  terminal  strip  (where  the  furnace
thermostat wires are connected).  For 2-stage heating only connect
just the R and W terminals.  For 2-stage cooling only connect the R
,G  and  Y  terminals.  For  both  2-stage  heating  and  2-stage  cooling
you must connect all 4 terminals.

If the low voltage terminal strip in the existing furnace has W1 and
W2  terminals,  or  Y1  and  Y2  terminals,  use  only  the  W1  and  Y1
terminals for the connections to the Well-Connect.

Do not remove any existing wires from the terminal strip in the furnace.

It is OK to

have  2  low  voltage  wires  on  the  same

terminal,  allowing  the  existing  thermostat  to

operate the existing furnace and/or air-conditioner if needed.
