OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Version 02/09
MOTOR VEHICLE ADAPTER FOR SMALL UNITS
SMP-20A
Item No. 51 17 20
INTENDED USE
1.
The SMP-20A converts the on-board voltage of a motor vehicle (12 to 13.8V voltage at the cigarette lighter
jack) to an adjustable output voltage of 1.5 to 12V for operating loads with the appropriate input voltage. The
maximum current consumption of the connected loads may not exceed 1.5A. Because of the six delivered
output connectors and the output current of 1.5A, the SMP-20A is suitable for operating devices like portable
TV sets, digital cameras, portable CD player, video games, computer equipment etc.
Unauthorised conversion and/or modification of the device are inadmissible because of safety and approval
reasons. Any usage other than described above is not permitted and can damage the product and lead to
associated risks such as short-circuit, fire, electric shock, etc. Please read the operating instructions thoroughly
and keep them for further reference.

•
Product safety
Never exceed the maximum input voltages and never connect loads with a nominal current
•
of more than 1.5A to the unit.
In commercial and industrial facilities the regulations for the prevention of accidents as laid
•
down by the professional trade association for electrical equipment and devices need to be
observed.
Never short-circuit the output of the unit. Otherwise the unit might be destroyed.
•
Never try to connect the output connector to the operated unit by force. If you have chosen the
•
right connector, it can be connected easily.
The unit may only be used in cars. Never connect the cigarette lighter connector to the sockets
•
of other vehicles (> 12V)..
Check the input voltage and power consumption of the unit to be connected before connecting
•
the SMP-20A.
Wrong voltage and polarity as well as excessive power consumption might destroy the
•
connected unit or the SMP-20A.
When used in conjunction with other devices, observe the operating instructions and safety
•
notices of connected devices.
The product must not be subjected to heavy mechanical stress.
•
The product must not be exposed it to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, intense vibration,
•
or dampness.
If there is reason to believe that safe operation is no longer possible, the device is to be
•
put out of operation and secured against unintended operation. Safe operation is no longer
possible if the device:
shows visible damages,
-
no longer works,
-
was stored under unfavourable conditions for a long period of time or
-
was subject to considerable transport stress
-
Miscellaneous
Repair works must only be carried out by a specialist/ specialist workshop.

Special connector for Sony devices
The polarity of the output voltage is preset (middle contact = positive, outer contact = negative polarity). I.e. the
output connectors cannot be plugged onto the connection cable in the wrong way.
Check whether the unit to be operated at the SMP-20A is provided with the same polarity as otherwise it can
not be operated at the SMP-20A.
Selection of the output voltage
Check the input voltage of the unit to be operated. Normally, the required input voltage is indicated on the
connecting socket or on the type label of the unit. The output voltage is adjusted to the required value by means
of the slide switch at the SMP-20A. All output voltages (except for 12V) are stabilized.
Connection and the on-board mains of cars
Connect the selected output connector to the unit to be operated. Connect the cigarette lighter connector to
the SMP-20A by using a 12V cigarette lighter jack. At the inside contact, the polarity of the socket must be
positive.
After the connection is completed, the red power LED lights up on the top of the SMP-20A. Place the unit on a
flame-retardant surface and ensure sufficient cooling and air circulation.
Switch on the connected unit. If the unit does not work, immediately switch it off, separate it from the SMP-20A
and check again the previous steps.
Please absolutely note the polarity of the input voltage of the SMP- 20A. If connected to
the wrong polarity, the components may be destroyed. Never cover the SMP-20A. Always
switch off the connected load when connecting it to the SMP-20A. Never start the engine
of the vehicle to which the SMP-20A is connected when operating the SMP-20A. Voltage
peaks might destroy the unit as well as connected loads. Before starting the engine,
separate the SMP-20A from the on-board mains, then start the engine. After starting the
engine, reconnect the SMP-20A to the on-board mains.
FUSE REPLACEMENT
5.
To check or to replace the integrated fuse, simply twist off the tip of the cigarette lighter connector, check the
integrated fuse and replace it by a new one of the same type (3A), if necessary.
DISPOSAL
6.
In order to preserve, protect and improve the quality of environment, protect human health and
utilise natural resources prudently and rationally, the user should return unserviceable product to
relevant facilities in accordance with statutory regulations.
The crossed-out wheeled bin indicates the product needs to be disposed separately and not as
municipal waste.
