COLDSTORE Compact Quick Start Guide

Ensure the system has not yet been switched on before mounting the first disks – the

COLDSTORE Compact start up procedure requires a minimum of two disks to be present for full
boot-up and normal operation.  If the system has been switched on in error, simply switch the
unit off by disconnecting the power jack before proceeding.  Further disks can be added later
whilst the system is running.

COLDSTORE Compact requires at least two disks for set up and configuration.  A minimum of three
disks are required for basic system operation (normal COLDSTORE mirrored overlapping-pair
mode), whilst four disks are the actual recommended minimum for full system operation (either
mirrored overlapping-pair mode or full mirrored-pair mode).

Carefully insert the disks in their holders into the Compact unit, starting from the left (Disk Slot 1)
and filling each slot in sequence with as many disks as required.

Disk insertion should not be forced and should take a medium pressure only.  If the disk will

not engage, check that the holder is correctly aligned - the holder should run smoothly into the
top and bottom slots.  Check also that the disks have been fixed into the holders the correct way
around.

After fitting all required disks, re-fit the vented front plate and secure with the two screws
previously set aside, using the hex key provided.

To remove a disk, push the tab (i.e. the top section of the holder) down, releasing the locating clip at
the top and simultaneously pull the disk and holder using the finger access cut-out areas in the
middle of the holder.  Disengage the SATA connection by pulling on the holder and carefully slide
the disk and holder out of the disk slot.  You may find this this easier to do with a finger pressing on
the tab and using the other hand to pull on the disk holder.

I)  Power Up

Once the disks are properly loaded and the front plate re-attached, switch on COLDSTORE
Compact by inserting the power jack at the left side of the unit.  The blue power-on LED will
illuminate to show that the power is on.

As COLDSTORE Compact boots, all of the green disk LEDs will illuminate (whether there is a disk
present in that slot or not), indicating that the system is booting up.  After boot is complete, the
green LEDs will go out and the Compact will begin the disk check sequence.  It will power up each
disk present in turn, log the details and capacity, and move onto the next disk, illuminating the green
LED above the disk slot as it does so.  Normally it takes a few seconds to check each disk.  Once all
disk checks are complete, COLDSTORE will switch to idle mode, ready and available for receiving
and recording data.  In typical normal recording mode, two green LEDs will indicate the current disk
writing pair, or none if the system is idle (i.e. no data is being written to it).

For a complete explanation of the front panel LEDs operation and their meanings, see the following
section.

Once switched on, the unit should NOT be moved, as in common with any disk array type, this

may risk damage to disks in operation.
