1 INTRODUCTION
The TE-50 converts analog voice from a telephone interface into a digital signal and multiplexes the
digital signal across trunk circuits to other TE-50 nodes where the digital signal is output to external
voice switch equipment in either in digital format or converted to analog format.
The analog voice traffic is digitized before it is multiplexed into a digital trunk circuit.
The digitization process produces a higher quality signal that can be integrated into higher speed
transmission circuits. All voice signals are digitized in the Turin Interface Module (IM) into a 64Kbps
digital signal for each voice port. All of the 64Kbps signals are routed to a Digital Access Cross-
Connect Switch (DACS). The DACS is integrated in the TE-50 system and may be included as a
standard or optional feature. The DACS is used to cross connect the 64Kbps signals directly to other
voice interface IM or aggregate up to 30 signals into a 2Mbps (E1) data stream. The E1 signal can be
transmitted over electrical or optic fiber trunk circuits to other telephones or voice switch systems.
Turin network products can multiplex the aggregate E1 signal into higher speed trunk circuits that
include T1, E1, T3, E3 electrical interfaces and 2Mbps, 65Mbps, and 155Mbps optical interfaces
including SDH STM-1 and SONET OC-3.
