Tropos 3310 and 3320 Router Installation Guide

7

RF Planning Guidelines

Each Tropos router can operate with a wide range of network topologies. To maximize coverage
range, locate the router in wireless-friendly areas. Try not to place them in areas that can block or
interfere with transmission. Place each router in a location at least 15 to 20 feet from any other
transmitter to prevent the possibility of interference.

Locating routers high on a wall or hanging from a ceiling is a good start. This allows
transmission over the entire environment or office space with minimal blocking objects. If you
are trying to cover an outdoor area from inside a building, place routers in front of non-metallic
coated windows, or close to the outside walls of the building.

Installation Instructions

Required Tools and Supplies

You need the following tools and supplies to complete the installation:

„

Phillips-head screwdriver

„

Drill with 3/16 inch diameter drill bit

„

Stud finder

„

Tamper-resistant TORX key driver T10-H (if tamper-resistant TORX screws are used)

„

A non-switched, 100 to 240 Volt 15 Amp duplex power outlet within five feet of the
mounting location (not needed if the Power over Ethernet [PoE] used to power the router
will be provided by the attached communications device).

Note

To comply with FCC RF exposure limits, dipole antennas should be located at a minimum distance of 7.9
inches (20cm) or more from people.

Connecting Power and LAN

The Tropos 3310 and 3320 routers are powered with 11 to 55 VDC. There are many ways to
provide DC power for the router, but the two simplest and most common methods are:

„

A PoE injector such as a Laird POE-48i (Tropos part number PS077001). This device is
powered from a standard 120 / 240VAC power source and delivers the DC voltage that the
router needs. It also takes the Ethernet signal from the network equipment that the router is
connected to (such as Ethernet switch, router, or cable modem) and combines the signal with
the DC power on a single cable. See
